Usually when we make a mold or pattern we have a rough idea what it’s for (in this case a wind deflector for a truck). However we don’t always get to see a finished product. The mold leaves our shop and that’s that.

But when our plumbers arrived the other day to do some work we immediately recognized this one. We quickly took out our phones and snapped a few pictures. We spent a few minutes examining the deflector. The plumbers were confused to say the least. It wasn’t until we told them that we had made the mold for the deflector that they understood why we were looking at it. They still lacked the enthusiasm that we of course had.

The deflectors are vacuum formed ABS. We created the sealed hardwood mold. I can even remember making the logo by hand (this was before we had a CNC router). The logo had to be smaller (thinner lines) in the amount that the plastic was thick, otherwise it would look too ‘fat’ once formed. From the looks of the finished part, everything seemed to work out just fine.

Here’s a custom bathroom vanity we just made for a local home owner. It’s a custom counter top depth of 20″. Because of where the door is situated, a 24″ counter wouldn’t work. We used pre-finished birch plywood for the carcass, and did a satin black lacquer finish on the outside.

The counter top looks like natural stone, but is actually Formica’s 180fx laminate (calcutta marble). The great thing about this laminate is that the pattern repeats on a much larger scale, so the laminate tends to look more like natural stone than the old style of “textured” laminate.

The most difficult task was finding sinks that would fit and still leave a bit of room around them. The inside of the bowl is just over 16″.

Check out a few progress pics below.

We were contacted by a local dairy farmer that was having trouble with his existing branding irons. The aluminum handles were wearing out too quickly, and it was becoming expensive to constantly replace. You’re probably wondering how a branding iron handle wears out. It turns out the existing handles were mushrooming too much on the ends where they were being hit with a hammer. The metal was too soft. And now you’re wondering why in the world they have to hit the ends with a hammer.

When you think of a branding iron, you’re probably assuming they leave these in a fire to heat up, then press them into the cow to leave a mark. No hammer required. However with this type of branding, they use dry ice. The numbers are attached to the handles with a rod and when the number is placed on the ice, they hit the handle end with a hammer to force it deeper, and make it colder faster. So instead of using a hot branding iron on the cow, they use an extremely cold one.

The cost to the customer to have new ones made wasn’t much more than buying new ones from their existing supplier. However now that they own their own tooling, they are able to sell these to other dairy farmers and actually make money with them.

So what seemed like a cost to the customer to replace old equipment, was actually an investment opportunity for them.

2012 was a great year for us at ISF, we moved into our new purpose-built facility (we’re still putting the finishing touches on it), we experienced another year of growth, and things are looking great for 2013. Thanks to everyone we worked with this past year and we wish you all the best in 2013.
